(True) Reflections

I met a man in
Some dark place
He knew your name
But hid his face
And when I asked
To see his mind
He said, "You’ll have to wait."

It took some time
To find my place
A torture room
There’s some mistake
We built the walls
And fill this place
You lock the doors with hate

"Follow me"
The stranger said
"To see my mind
Look in your head"
He held the mirror
Much too close
I saw your face instead

"It’s just a trick
Of light" he said
"You cannot reach
My mind just yet
It’s time, I think
For you to rest"
He led me to his bed

"Do not be afraid"
He said
I’ve met you before and
I’m not impressed
And when I lay
To rest my head
I could not sleep ‘till dawn

At night I woke
In some dark place
I could not see
Or touch your face
I ran and ran
And through a door
I had not left at all

Still inside this
Tortured head
The stranger laughed
And cried, and said
"The mirror’s cracked
Your mind instead
This mirror’s hard to break"

It took some time
For me to find
That I’m lost in
Some other mind
The stranger turned
To me and sighed
I recognised my face

It took no time
To realise
That I was looking
Through your eyes
The stranger said
To my surprise
"This mirror’s of the soul"

I asked how
This effect’s undone
I cannot do
Another one
It’s time for us
To rest as one
This lesson has been done

I met a girl
In some dark place
She knew my name
I knew her face
And when we reached
To touch our minds
We had no need to wait

And every
Now and then
When I see
Your face again
I feel an image
In my mind
I’m looking through
Those eyes
